Rain Then Shine

In the late summer, right after Hurricane Irene, I was called by Bliss, the teen accessory line, to style their spring catalog. Though the storm didn't make a huge mess in NYC - upstate NY was another story. Our shoot (which was planned months in advance) was scheduled to take place on a horse farm in Warwick -about 2 hours north of the city.

To accompany the bright, hot day in early September we had a bright and early call-time - 7am to be exact! Our departure from Manhattan had to be well beyond the wee hours to get to set on-time. Though the rain had stopped days prior to our shoot, the horse farm was drenched and fully saturated with mud. Nevertheless, we had a job to do. So decked in our Wellies, and covered in bug spray we proceeded to create a series of adorable images shot by Alexandra Grablewski for the 2012 spring catalog.

Working with teens has always been a favorite for me. It's kind of a free-styling situation. Layer and play to your hearts content until the outfit is complete. And don't forget to bump up the bling-- especially if it's an accessory brand that's being featured.

My job - to get the supporting wardrobe and style the accessories to shine!

Working with the overall concept of bohemian fun I mixed in some denim and added some lace. Urban Outfitters, Free People and Top Shop were major players in the shopping department while a general mix and match attitude brought it all together.

Fun Ways To Get Your Layer On

Apparently, the crisp weather decided to arrive in one fall swoop - which may be here to stay. Fortunately I've got some tricks up my sleeve (literally) to add both warmth and style points to my ensemble. Playing with layers makes it fun and easy to stay on top of the seasons trends. With the big stories being bright color and textures to boot, my layers are working overtime this fall. No need to lighten up, just layer up.

According to The Man Repeller, the skirt over pants thing is happening. And I concur. Especially when it's a fitted mini with a pair of skinnies. In other words to avoid looking over-slouched, the skirt (or dress!) should be somewhat tailored and nipped in at the waist, and the pants need to be slim. Heels (I'm doing wedges this year!) are essential unless you're a 5'10 model in which case no rules apply to you anyway. To achieve success, score yourself some black super-tight, super-skinny pants, and layer away under a fitted skirt or dress.

If you haven't already, go get a leather jacket. It's a great investment piece that won't ever go out of style. I have one from a zillion years ago that still looks fresh! I love love love to layer this baby with a hoodie underneath. You may be thinking that hoodies are reserved for frat boys and sports jocks, but guess again....Several designers including Alexander Wang and Rag & Bone are endorsing this whole sporty chic vibe - it's coming on strong this fall, and especially next spring.

Clearly the days of no socks are numbered. I'm definitely a fan of layering underneath t-straps and wedge sandals, but it makes me really happy to see my socks peeking out from my boots. Nothing too bold or extreme - just a sweet, simple hello from below.

It's Not Too Late For Back To School

Okay, I know we are well past the "back to school" phase of the season, but I figured there's a bit of leeway considering the Indian summer that's been happening. Have we not been dwelling in the tank top and shorts portion from our closets? I know I have, and my kids most definitely have. Which is why I find it's still relevant to post the back to school fashion story I styled for Time Out New York Kids.

What a bunch of cuties these models were! Real kids (in other words, not real models) who really live in NYC. And total pros they were in front of the camera. We had six kids from kindergarten thru 5th grade. It was a story based on showcasing a style that's grade specific. What does that mean for me, the stylist? A boatload of clothes were necessary. Oh, did I mention we shot 3 looks for each kid? So that's 18 looks total not including the "options" that are oh so necessary on every photo shoot.

I work on kids shoots often these days, and I definitely have my go-tos for kids merch. Time Out also had their requirements. The clothes needed to be shoppable at the time the magazine was released. They also love to feature NYC boutiques. So between my list and the magazine's suggestions there were about 40 stores / showrooms / clothing companies called.

I'd have to say my favorite part of the shoot is getting in all the merch, and putting together outfits. So. Much. Fun. I get to play with neon shoelaces, moccasin boots and purple jumpers. Not to mention layering up the wazoo. I love me a little layer! And kids are the perfect place to get that going. Check out the full story here to see all the brands featured. The Uniform Faces Up

We all really need a go-to in the wardrobe department. Something to count on for sartorial satisfaction. Whether it's for work, play, or just the day to day, a uniform makes getting dressed a breeze. Quite simply - this outfit works!

At the sweet age of five, my son has tuned into his uniform needs. For him, it's the full-on soccer kit (for those unfamiliar with team talk, this refers to the pro soccer attire a.k.a shirt and short combo). He's got about 37 different countries represented but it's always the same old same old - polyester jersey with a number, name of country and team player, and usually punched with an ad logo (yes, my son runs around wearing Samsung across his chest!) Then there's the polyester shorts often with a double stripe down the side, and the knee high socks which thankfully can come in cotton though many still use that itchy sweat aborbant poly blend. Well if David Beckham can do it.....

Of course there are the jobs that require a uniform. As a waitress I made the non-fashion statement in black pants, white button down and wrap-around apron. Some careers are a bit more stylized with their uniforms. There was a time when I considered embarking on a career as a flight attendant just to wear the stewardess sets designed by Christian Lacroix, Pucci and Kate Spade! See for yourself in the upcoming Christina Ricci show Pan Am. But nothing tops the first class fashion from PSA in the seventies. Gotta love a red go-go boot and top hat to match!

Right now, my uniform is based on comfort (it has to survive my city girl pace!) with a teensy bit of trend thrown in for fun. Think slouchy top (anything by James Perce will do), skinny jeans (J Brand still does it for me) and boots. I top off the look with layers of necklaces (currently coveting everything by Pamela Love). It's a simple statement - effortlessly executed with maximum results. But most importantly - a super cute outfit!

Get It Right With Brights

Leave it to the fash-pack to take a 360 turn-around, and find their sweet spot in brights. While *neutrals* are definitely a buzz word this season, bold colors lit up the S/S 11 runways from hat to heel. As we trudge through the extended forecast of not-yet-warm-enough weather, our inner stylist is itching for a sunny reprieve. I know we're not yet bikini bound, but we can still call on the warmer temps with a pop of color. Here's how to start small then build up to full-on brightness.

A simple, but effective way to bring on the color is with make up. I'm loving the bold lips shown at Vena Cava. Try Revlon's Coralberry to top your pucker with a punch.

Turn up the volume with neon. A neutrally toned outfit pulls together in vibrant success when looped with one of these Balenciaga belts.

Hemlines have grown this season. While the lady-like look says it all for some, I'm so ready to sweep it to the floor. How about one of these Zara maxis seemingly pulled from the rainbow?

What You Need For Spring

Confession-- I'm always a bit confused when the current editorials are featuring clothes that I drooled over months earlier on the internet. When the Spring books of fashion's finest came out a few weeks ago I was (and still am!) pouring myself into the instant feeds and live streams of A/W11. Though we live in a now-based culture, it's imperative to find time to sort through the current trends, and decide which pieces are purchase-worthy, for our closets' sake! Since we're a mere two weeks from spring, it's time to make sense of those March editorials. Here's what's needed for now- it's spring time baby!

You read it here along with every other fashion source, the 70's are back. Wide-leg trousers, billowing blouses, and platform shoes. Think hip, but not hippie. Check out Charlie's Angels to see how it really went down.

Florals for spring, how groundbreaking - as Miranda Priestly stated with such snark in the Devil Wears Prada. Well like it or not, the buds have bloomed, and florals are definitely popping up. Chris Benz mixed his flowers with other patterns to keep it fresh for all.

No matter what you don this spring you must include color. Whether it's neon, blocking or one of the pantene faves (honeysuckle, beeswax, coral rose) bright color is an absolute must this spring. Versus staged their runway as a playground- guess it's time to literally follow the rainbow.

Time To Shape Up

I am a true believer that a little sunshine goes a long way. This week's sneak peak into spring is the perfect pick-up to the mid-winter hump, inspiring me to break out my flirty skirts, and shoot the breeze. Only issue -- my bare legs are still wearing February's dark days. Fortunately for me, photo shoots are the best place to indulge in secrets of all things fashion and beauty. Recently, on an editorial shoot I got to work with fitness model Regina who had some great tips on how to stay in shape. As I styled her for a story in the March issue of Prevention Magazine, she shared some great advice on how to maximize in fitness and health.

Eating well is crucial, but supplements can pick up the slack. Calcium and magnesium at night give the body time to absorb. A multi-vitamin also taken at night will recoup and regulate the body systems. Fish oil, vitamin E and vitamin C in the morning are the perfect wake up calls. This black and white tank by Hussein Chalayan for Puma propels the look forward, and adds interest to the American Apparel red shorts. The cute wrist band keeps her up to speed.Mixing up the routine keeps your workout fresh. Since our muscles have memories, the more you switch it up, the stronger you'll become. She & Him’s Don’t Look Back is a sixties throwback featuring lead singer Zooey Deschanel who takes the cute factor then multiplies it by ten. Starting with the mid-century Danish interiors to the Deschanel duplicated back-up singers, the swiftly choreographed “Swim” shakes the entire room from its quirky core. Break out the bubbly because it's time to swoon, awards season has arrived. While couture gowns are the darlings of the red carpet, the Little Black Dress repeatedly takes the stage. At the 2011 Critics' Choice Movie Awards, Eva Mendez in Valentino and Mila Kunis in Nina Ricci made big statements in their Little Black Dresses. The Academy Awards aren’t on your calendar? No worries, there's always an event around the bend that calls for the perennial fave. Here's what to look for in your next LBD.

First and foremost is the silhouette. Though born in the 1920's with long fitted sleeves and an above-the-knee hemline, the LBD now comes in many shapes and styles. For those who fare on the petite side, try a short, voluminous frock to lengthen those lovely gams. If you're voluptuously endowed then go for a body con variation that bumps up your curves.

Just because the LBD is a classic doesn't mean it can't feel fresh. It needs to be versatile and provide options. It should glide from day to night, with an effortless chic floating entrain. Allow the simplicity of the style to create the foundation, and let accessories elevate the occasion. Think sweet cardigan with ballet flats for office appeal, and sparkly baubles with sky high heels for drama galore.

Lastly it needs to feel like you. It's essential that your personal style is incorporated into the design. Though the concept behind the LBD is quite iconic, it's the owner of the dress who makes it unique.

That 70's Thing

The S/S 11 runways spelled it out loud and clear - The 70's are back! Marc Jacobs, Derek Lam and Tory Burch declared the return of the me decade in bold color, strong stripes and denim galore. Being too young to sex it up at Studio 54, I missed out on satin fuchsia hot pants. Instead I was cruising the cul de sac on my banana seat bicycle sporting a rainbow cowl neck, denim gauchos and puma sneakers. While satin fuchsia hot pants aren't making the rounds this spring (although there's satin and fuchsia at Marc Jacobs!) I cannot wait to get my hands on these 70's staples.

The wide leg trouser has been treading the surface for sometime now. It's all about the small waist and accompanying heels with these britches. Now that they've crossed over the tipping point, it shouldn't be hard to nab a pair with the perfect 70's fit.

A true embodiment of 70's rock, the big brimmed hat, sat right at home in swinging London, and feels exactly on time circa now in the Meatpacking District (shot by The Sartorialist.)

G old hoops are the final step in achieving 70's chic. Sleek, simple and an absolute must-have. The Soul Train wouldn't have been the same without them.

Hey Yo, Its The Navajo

Bright textiles with Navajo and Aztec influences are showing up big this season of cozy comfort. They're a warm blend of Old Americana and world class charm. With a sweet wink to Southwestern and Mexican stylings, these bold patterned pieces are sure to dazzle any outfit. Let's start with the basics.Pendleton, a true pioneer of heritage fashion, is no newcomer to the collaboration game. Opening Ceremony, Urban Outfitters, Levi's, and Hurley have all recently taken a Pendleton swing. Now the original chief has brought in a new team to bump up their design with a trimmer fit geared to a younger crowd. The Pendleton Portland Collection will debut Fall 11.Minnetonka, another trail blazer in Americana designs, have created moccasins since the forties. House Calls with Doc

First embraced by blue collar workers for their sturdy build, then hit hard by skin heads determined to stand out, Dr. Martens have bombarded the mainstream as a rebellious, anti-fashion statement. So how is it that the anti-fashion brand has become so fashionable? Designer collabs with Yoji Yamamoto, Jean Paul Gautier, Opening Ceremony and now BAPE, have certainly paved the way, but Dr. Martens are continually peeped marching down runways, shot for street style sites, and accenting A list celebrities strutting around town.

For S/S 11 the original bootaneer drops down from an 8 eye style to a 3 hole shoe. Softening the stream in sorbet tones, floral fancies and wild animal prints, they're right in stride with the trends of Spring.

Mixing prints has long been one my favorite style statements. So it's no surprise that patchwork pieces hold high rank among my must-haves for the season. The combination of texture, color and print pranced full force down the F/W 10 runways, and surges ahead for S/S 11. Rag & Bone, Rodarte and Dkny are just a few designers showing the eclectic mélange of patchwork creations.

An easy way to incorporate patchwork is with a winter hat. Knits hug patchwork like icing on a cake. Face to Face makes a helmet hat out of recycled wool - stylish and green

While the trend is wrapped around boho chic, you don't have to embrace the hippy dippy to wear patchwork. Junya Watanabee's distressed mesh leggings set you up to thrash around with rock and roll.

The Boys Are Alright

A few weeks ago I styled a shoot for photographer Jorg Meyer. The concept was simple- two boys with a shopping cart, in a parking lot.
To stay within this theme, I kept the styling effortless (as it often should be for kids), and relied on accessories for extra flair.

When styling boys, layering is the name of the game, especially when it's freezing outside (which it was on our shoot day!) With Hayden's blonde hair and fair skin I couldn't resist a primary green tee. This crow shirt from Threadless was layered with an H&M long sleeve basic. The fedora (also from H&M) tops off the look to let you know he's ready for action.

When playing with layers I love to go for the unexpected. The Kiss rock concert tee provides the peek-a-boo element to this outfit. It was me who gave Rolando the checked scarf, but it was he who decided to play Mr. Bandito.

Color Coding

The bold tones from last spring/summer shows no signs of letting up. A slew of designers including Miu Miu, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Karen Walker, sent rainbow driven designs down the runway. I am always prone to a dash of color in my outfit. But I also try to mix it up unexpectedly - stepping beyond the typical black, grey and brown. Here's a fresh take on color combos.

Yellow tights will boost any outfit into vibrancy, but when paired with a red dress it turns to day glo charm as shown by Manish Arora.

Choosing several hues for color blocking gives a modern twist to the 80's trend. Lacoste played with this theme for Fall.

Introducing a deeper shade of berry ripens the look from monochromatic to cool color display. Jenni Kayne adds an extra splash with sharp accessories.

Workout In Color

In deep crisis, mass anxiety or even a small situation, I often rely on my exercise regime to whip me into shape. They say- when the going gets tough, the tough get going. And what better way to get going then in technicolor?

On a fitness shoot the other day, I styled the model in a playful palette of berries. It had been awhile since I've shopped the fitness market so off I went to Hardtail, Zohba and Athleta. To top off the look with bright accessories I perused American Apparel for their vibrant selection.

The bike shot required something with sleeves. I found this amazing top at Adidas. Stella McCartney has designed an extremely hip collection that works equally well on the street or at the gym.

The next morning I ran into my stylish neighbor Akiko after her marathon training. Love the yellow puffer and orange laces - truly running with the rainbow!

Time For Tights

Last week was all about the bare legs with knee high boots. Now it's about tights. Worn with skirts or shorts, I love me some colorful tights. Snatched from Teen Vogue, this photo sums it up: have fun with color, and do it up with texture.

These days, texture shouldn't be hard to find. Swiss dots and stripes, along with a bevy of other designs are breathing life into monochromatic looks. It's like a little party for your legs. Go for a fun pattern, or bright color to get the party started right.

Right Now: Transition Dressing

Who knew that fall in NYC would feel more like LA? I will confess the Cali-loving-boho-hippie-chick deep down is LOVING it! But the NYC stylist is a bit at odds as I try to integrate fall trends. Thank goodness I've still got Spring / Summer dresses within reach. Because with just the right touch of layering, these warm weather lovelies will keep blooming through autumn. All you need are a few key pieces to feel fresh this season.

Bare legs with knee high boots is an absolute must-have for transitional dressing. I got my Gee Wawa boots in gray this year, but I also adore boots in plum, cherry, or chestnut.

A military jacket is perfect for layering over a floral dress. It instantly brings you up to speed this Fall as shown on The Sartorialist.

Whether it's worn for warmth, color or just plain adornment, the scarf has joined the ranks of a year round essential.

Sneak Peak: Chan Luu

About two years ago I was performing a closet cleanse for a personal styling client, and noticed a gorgeous array of scarves and jewelry. They were all designed by Vietnamese born, Los Angeles based Chan Luu. Such a treat to have these pieces at my disposal as I adorned and updated my client's closet. Not long after that introduction I was called to style a shoot for Best You Magazine. I decided it was time to take a trip to the NY showroom, and acquaint my eyes with the collection for myself. Since then, I've kept Chan Luu on my radar for styling women with sweet sexiness. Last week I got an invitation to preview the latest collection. Not one to refuse an opportunity for a sneak peek (and cupcakes!), I headed to the garment district to preview Chan Luu Spring 2011.

In addition to an enormous collection of accessories, Chan Luu makes clothes. She creates girly pieces speckled with sparkle. For the Spring collection she worked with neutrals. Cream, beige, grey and dusty rose items were gently bedazzled with pearls, sequins and beads giving just the right touch of color.

The entire collection while light and airy, feels elegant and fun. Crystallized tops are layered with beaded bras. The transparency of the mesh skirt fills out another layer for this look.

Mixing fabrics is one of her specialties. Lace, crochet, silk and mesh create the perfect back drop for gemstones and sequins.

More mixing and matching to create sweet sexiness.Layering is also a big part of Luu's aesthetic. Strand necklaces, crinkled scarves and wrap bracelets roll up into an ethereal ball of charm.

Luu's collaboration with Banana Republic and Garnet Hill have drawn attention to her signature bracelet. For Spring, she's got brightly colored thread on the wrap - California Dreaming anyone?

Shots Of Something

A few weeks ago I styled a shoot for lifestyle photographer Chris Sanders. With access to a huge house and expanding lawn, we huffed it out to the country burbs of Westchester to create an end-of-the-summer blowout. The cast was a mixed bag of ages and styles. I worked with their clothing, and key pieces shopped by me.

It's hard to resist a cute polka dot, and this little number from Anthropologie was no exception. It said fiesta with just the right accent. The skinny black belt was part of the dress, but Julia (Chris had cast all actors for this shoot rather than models) had a vintage lace jacket that created the perfect match. It's such a delight (and / or relief) when an outfit comes together from random pieces of the pie.

Now that dark denim is considered an acceptable attire for fancy affairs, dressing men has never been easier, or more fun. Add a cool blazer, sharp tie and smart boots to transform everyday jeans to evening wear. In this shot, Levi's anchored a Zara blazer and J. Crew tie to a party fit for all.

Caught In The Rain

This week's forecast (just like last week) has saturated the city with rain. What a relief that I've got a solid pair of Wellies to slip on. Rain boots have come a long way from sloshy galoshes to fashionable footwear. You don't have to spend a fortune to look cute and stay dry. Here are my favorite pairs of rainboots.

Hunter - A classic Wellie. Go for the matte finish to take down the mud absorbing shine.

Keen - Reminds me of the moon boots I used to wear as a kid. Space age chic.

Chooka - The black lace-ups, very au current for the season.

Sweet Teen

If sugar, spice and everything nice makes a little girl, what happens when you add a sassy crinoline and rocker tee? A couple weeks ago, I got to play around with all things sweet in styling Elle Winter for publicity photos. Elle is a super cute pop singer with great energy. Her fresh enthusiasm culminated in an informal, West Village street performance. I like to think of styling tweens as free styling. The whole notion of accessorizing and layering is so loose that it becomes a playful expression of style. Best fit for those not quite sixteen.

For this street shot taken by Gail Albert Halaban, Elle wore a vintage tee, cream petticoat from American Apparel, belt from Urban Outfitters, and her own jacket. Studded leather bracelets worn up the arm added a touch of rock and roll to the ensemble. Not shown in the photo are Sam Edelman combat boots and knee socks from Espirit.

Whooo Wants An Owl?

You don't have to look far to spot an owl these days. The bright eyed creature known for mystery and nocturnal protection has carved a hole in the tree of fashion. First discovered for its old world charm in Grandma's jewelry box, the wise owl hoots back making a bold statement this fall.

Starting high on the spectrum with Tiffany stained glass lamps and diamond encrusted brooches, the Owl slowly trickled down to the mainstream where it landed on most everything worth a hoot. Tee shirts, pillows, bags and jewelry are just a few owl flecked products this season.

Whether you're looking for a simple pendant or a sparkly shine, Mod Cloth, Lucky Brand and Marc by Marc Jacobs have all come out with an Owl or two. For something more original, try Etsy where crafty one-of-a-kinds may still exist.

Fall On

Okay people, I'm ready to switch it up. I'm putting my lightweights up on the shelf, bringing out the heavies, and starting to think about the new additions that will make their way into my closet. With menswear still going strong I'm thinking a shrunken tweed blazer would make the perfect back-to-school statement. Who says I actually need to be on campus for that look? And while the temps have dipped into cooler air, I'm not quite ready to pull on tights. I'm going to stick with knee socks, pair them with clogs and an above-the-knee skirt. I'm also feeling earth tones for extra warmth. Deep camel, military green and chocolate brown make an easy match for fall. Especially when they're perked up with pops of color.

On a tween shoot I styled last week for photographer Jorg Meyer, I found the blazer in the boys section of Daffy's. The knee socks from American Apparel and the bag and shoes are vintage.

Pause

I like to think of myself as someone committed to walking with the hectic pace of New York City. So it was a bit of a shocker when today, I decided to give pause on my usual shopping run to designer discount haven Century 21, located at the heart of ground zero.
Looking at the mass construction, the fall transition wardrobe that I was hoping to piece together felt so trivial. The towering cranes overshadowed all must-have items that had previously overtaken my thoughts.

I was living on the Lower East Side when the towers went down. And I remember when everything felt stripped to the core. Living amidst the total shut down of New York City left a strong imprint on my mind. It was a time when paranoia changed the world, but there was a calm permeating the vicinity. There was time to pause.

Now, 9 years later we've caught up to speed. In the midst of Fashion Week, Back to School, and all the other happening events of the season -- take a moment to pause and remember what is truly essential.

Ready For Combat

It's 95 degrees in the shade, and all I can think about is boots. Next week's shoot calls for a downtown edge so I must include the military trend that's in heavy surplus for Fall. Back in the day I liked to consider myself somewhat of a fashion rebel- sporting burgundy hair, ripped fishnets, skull jewelry, and never with out my Docs. The lace-up black boot was a staple for my new wave uniform. And just as fashion always hits the recycling bin, the combat boot comes back in full force. Treading away from the hardcore punk movement and stepping into the mainstream we saw the Fall 2010 runways of Marc by Marc Jacobs, Rag & Bone and Burburry Prorsum marching to the military beat. While soldiers may tuck their boots into cargo pants, I'd recommend not pairing the two together. Try something a bit more flirty and relaxed. Slip on a short skirt and keep the top laces open just enough so your ankle doesn't fall out. For a sporty touch try pulling your socks up the leg, passing the top of the boot. The more soft and broken-in, the better the boot. To keep it real try Kaufman's Army & Navy for an authentic pair, or if you're looking to rock the Doc then Zappos has your pair.

Style For The Jury

This week had me flying to Los Angeles to venture into the world of men's fashion. I was hired to style Danny Elfman for the Venice Film Festival. Because of the hot and muggy weather in Venice I needed to suit him up in an assortment of lightweight pieces that could take him from movie screenings to black tie events. This required a travel-size collection of lightweight pullovers, versatile pants and tuxedo-like suits. My assignment - to pack for Danny's trip sticking carefully to his trifecta of cool, comfortable and dark clothing.

For the various evening events, a well fitting suit was essential. I was extremely delighted to stumble across a never worn, Zegna blue suit in Danny's closet. A blue suit reads chic and modern. When paired with a custom charcoal dress shirt and finished with a burgundy tie and pocket square - the man is ready to roll.

Since there would be long days in the screening room, the all purpose henley would make an excellent choice. I found a couple from John Varvatos that made the cut into Danny's wardrobe. A slight departure from the typical v-neck pullover, yet still meets all the criteria for festival screenings.

As any guy can attest, the button down plays a huge role in mens fashion. Danny has a few striped stand-bys that will definitely go to Venice, but I wanted to stir things up a bit. I decided to purchase a black and white checked Paul Smith exclusive along with a midnight blue from John Varvatos. Though tip toeing away from the dark color palette, both these shirts were very flattering, and had potential to create a nice break from basic black.

At the end of my session with Danny we scheduled a visit from the tailor. Some new purchases needed altering, and several items from his closet needed to be re-fit. Check out EyeHeartStyle's previous post on closet cleansing for a closer look at how to re-work old items back into rotation.

Neon Lights

A quick glimpse around town shows the 80's revival shining on, in day-glo to be exact. Neon colors are hard to ignore. I didn't embrace the trend on it's previous go-around, but now I see the sunny hues as an opportunity to brighten up my look. I certainly don't advocate the head to toe neon shown on the Spring 2010 Runways. I prefer to start small, stick with accessories, and wear only one neon piece at a time. My favorite way to incorporate neon is on the nails. It's a fun way to say hello color, and set your way to a brighter day.

Another place we're seeing neon is on exposed undergarments. A fluorescent bra strap glimmers peek-a-boo in a not so subtle way. A racer back tank or dress achieves this most easily.Neon flip flops, or even neon shoelaces pop out from below with a huge burst of color.

American Apparel Goes Mom

In another attempt to shock the masses, American Apparel has come out with a new round of billboards. Moving away from their previous teenager-in-the-basement style of modeling, they're now focusing on the mom who is upstairs baking cookies. With pristine blouses neatly tucked into pleated pants belted to the gills and socks worn with loafers- the creators of downtown cool have flown to the midwest. And stocked it in a multitude of colors.
If the country club mom isn't enough of a shocker, then what about the fact that they're being plastered allover telephone booths. Time to call home.

Mix And Match Bikinis

Say bye-bye to one size fits all in bikini shopping. As swimwear manufacturers have clued into the fact that a woman may wear a size medium on top, but a size large on bottom, it's become easier to the find the perfect fit. And a lot more fun to strut your stuff poolside. Recently, in preparation for a trip to the shore I played around with bikini separates. After mixing and matching all the available options, I finally settled on a gold polka dot bottom with a navy and gold trimmed top. The gold on both pieces pulled the suit together. On a photo shoot last week I continued with this idea of bikini separates. I paired a Marc by Marc Jacobs blue polka dot bandau top with a Juicy Couture string bikini bottom. The color combination was seamless. When swimming in the world of bikini separates remember to build up the common thread between top and bottom. Whether it's in the color or style- keep it coordinated but don't worry about going over the top. It's supposed to feel playful - like a day of fun in the sun. If you're not sure how to mix and match then choose black. It's the one color that fits all in bikini separates.

Cool Off With A Straw Fedora

Summer's latest go-to accessory, the straw fedora, cools you down in more ways than one. If you like the (still going strong) menswear look then this hat is definitely for you. The lightweight fabric is easy to wear on a hot summer day (hello 104º! ) The brim provides sun protection from those harmful rays, especially when worn low on the brow - similar to your favorite celeb going incognito. On a recent photo shoot I styled a mens hat with a feminine top to create softer appeal. The straw fedora was around last summer, but didn't reach the boiling point of today. It's readily available from most street vendors and flea markets as well as trend shops Urban Outfitters and Forever 21.

Jersey Style

Last week I spent the day with the cast from the Jersey Shore working on an MTV promo for the second season. Let it be known that this crew really can shut down a highway which is exactly what we did for the shoot. My job was to style them as close to their natural "style" as possible. So off I went in search of dragon kissed bikini tops and scarlet skulled tees. Ed Hardy, Joyce Leslie and more Ed Hardy -Here we come!

JWoww showed up in this dress. It suited her well so we kept it on for the first spot. It was of course, Ed Hardy. We paired it with a pair of snake skin heels. Those are also her fuschia hoop earrings.

The bikini was the director's idea because Angelina was shot sunbathing. I pulled tons of cut-off jean shorts in every size figuring they would definitely come in hand. Since jean sizes do vary from brand to brand it was important to have a wide range. Turns out all the girls except Snooki wore cut-offs at some point during the day. Angelina was also big on the accessories and went for the huge pendant that I got from none other than Strawberry.

More Ed Hardy and cut-off shorts. Also bronzer and gel.

Other items to note: Snooki really is tiny so it wasn't completely inappropriate to cut her dress almost 20 inches shorter. We asked the cast to bring some clothes to mix their stuff with what I brought. The Situation brought a suitcase with a month's worth of clothes. No doubt he takes his fashion very seriously. But even more serious about fashion is JWoww who debuted Filthy Couture - a clothing line of bathing suits, dresses and lingerie.

Sheer Solutions

Sheer pieces are hot this summer. Not the trashy, lace covered underwear as outwear look. But rather the lightest-weight cotton dresses with just a hint of soft lace or tiny ruffle trim. A simple glance at one of these pieces and I've already cooled down. Sure, the transparency of the fabric makes perfect sense in the heat, but don't grab the dress and go. There are ways to wear sheer without over-revealing. Read on to see how you can get crafty without feeling drafty.

Leggings In Summer?

It does sound sort of silly - adding a layer when it's crazy hot outside. But if you're at a certain point in your life when your legs don't feel up to par you may want to consider a pair of leggings for extra comfort. Go for a lightweight cotton that stops right at the knee. Is the extra layer really going to push you into sweat city? Honestly, I don't think so. It will, however, allow you to move freely in your summer frock (even it's too short!) You'll be able to bend over without risking overexposure, and have the right amount of coverage for unsightly bruises, pale skin or out of shape thighs. I wear cropped leggings under most mini skirts, dresses and tunic tops. I realize it can get pretty sticky on the subway platform, but at least it's your leggings that will do all the sticking on the seat. Target offers cropped leggings on the cheap.

The Jumpsuit: Not Just For Kids Anymore

I have fond memories from my jumpsuit days, when I was fresh faced and free on my feet. In other words, when I was too young to actually remember the jumpsuit. But the photos serve me well, and provide just enough information that one should have while roaming around in a candy colored suit. This all-in-one number carried me across the monkey bars and down the slide - it spelled good times and carefree rhymes. Who would have thought I could have a second go around. But it's here- uptown, downtown, all over town. Women are slipping easily into the jumpsuit without turning back. Contrary to what many believe, the jumpsuit is flattering for most. Though be warned - there are a lot of choices within this style. Short, cropped, harem, and so on. Let these guidelines show you the way, then take your turn to get out there and play.

For a curvy body, stick to a halter style that's fitted around the waist. And remember that black creates the most slimming silhouette.

If you're petite go for a cropped leg. This can lengthen the leg and the more skin you show, the less likely you'll get swallowed by fabric.

Use accessories to accentuate your outfit. Whether you choose a one shouldered evening look, casual safari style, or short playsuit let your accessories add rather than detract from the outfit. A simple rule for accessories: when in doubt, leave it out.

A Family Of Style

Last week I was hired to style the Novogratz family of Bravo tv's "9 By Design." I went to their impeccably designed townhouse on Manhattan's West Side Highway. My job was to work within the closets of the family, pull looks from their wardrobe and style everyone for the photo shoot.

Cortney has a huge closet. She's arranged it by category and color, similar to the suggestion made here when performing a closet cleanse. With tons of prints and vintage looking pieces Cortney's style shines through in an assortment of boho dresses, flowy tops and casual bottoms.

It's the details that pull this house together. There's an amazing art collection that is toted around with each move. The colors in the artwork play off the rest of the design elements scattered about.Cortney prides herself on being able to do everything from building a house to picking out a throw pillow. The beds they found for their twin daughters' room blends perfectly with their rustically modern sensibillity.

Styling With Mixed Prints

When done right - mixing prints creates a fun-filled whimsicality. When done wrong - it creates a sore for the eyes. To avoid joining the Raggedy Ann or Pippi Longstocking club keep a few simple guidelines in mind. Then you're on your way to an effortlessly cool look with mixed prints.

Background colors should blend easily. On the Proenza Schouler spring 2010 runway the blue, yellow and green from the skirt catch the same tones on top. The result is an exciting mix up of prints that don't stray too far off the palette.

Stripes are not really considered a print, but they are a great way to start mixing and matching. How cute is this dainty floral print and railroad striped overall?

Use a small print to balance out a bold print. Just remember that a bold print draws attention to your body.

The main thing to remember when mixing prints is to have fun. Loosen up and let your outfit speak for itself.

Sunnies For Sunshine

What better way to accessorize sunny days than with a cool pair of shades? With neutrals playing a big role in this seasons color story it's no surprise there's a bevy of options in the nude. Clear, pale pink and beige frames are accentuating eyes all over the city. Although lightly toned lenses will expose your peepers to others on the street, most come UV protected - feel free to peep in the clear.

I happen to love the look of these clear sunglasses from Prada, but I'm not sure my wallet feels the same. The beauty of designer shades is there are plenty of ways to score them on the cheap. Try shopping chains Century 21, Filene's Basement or Loehmann's for heavily discounted designer sunglasses.

Faded Denim

The recent fashion reports from Coachella showed flashes of faded denim amongst the bikini clad hippy chicks. True that the California music festival tied in retro concert fashion with modern day bands, but I like to root back to the gleaming 60's when faded bell bottoms were the uniform de rigueur. In those days, it seemed that all you needed were a pair of faded jeans and swinging braids to create a look of unadulterated cool. Sadly, all I can recall is that moment of acid wash in the 80's. Stone washed, acid washed, however it was washed, it was still pretty ugly.

Thankfully we've moved on, and faded denim has been brought up to date in more ways than one. I love the wide legged trouser. If you're gonna rock the wide legs, don't forget your heels -- they are essential if you are under 5'5''. They don't have to be stilettos, just anything to add inches. I wear mine with wedged espadrilles for a fresh spring time feel. If you need to make alterations, keep the hem low. Try the jeans on with the shoes you wear most, and take the hem up an inch or less from the floor. Aim to see just the tips of your shoes.

Types Of Stripes

If bold prints are taking off this season then striped tops are coming in for a landing. Horizontal hues are showing up all over with imprints of breton nautical, 80's punk and classic Coco Chanel. The striped top has been well worn through the years, and with good reason. It's become somewhat of a staple for summer time chic. True that not everyone is ripe for the stripe, but if you are feeling the breeze go ahead and take a dive. Here's what to look for in stripes.

Wide stripes do widen the waistline. If you're concerned about a thick torso then go for a narrow stripe which is more forgiving. Look for stripes that are one centimeter wide for optimal illusion.

Angular stripes add dimension and can elongate the torso. On a photo shoot last week I chose a zig zag striped bathing suit from Urban Outfitters and styled it as a top.

Tone on tone stripes are easier to pull off than a high contrast black and white. No matter what, jeans or a simple dark bottom round out the look.

Clothes To Wish For

If ever there was a time to be sprinkled with fairy dust it would definitely be while browsing through the spring collection of Cotélac. The carefree splendor of this French line has me wishing for their entire ensemble. A recent visit to the Soho store confirms what the website and reviews hinted - the clothes are exquisitely made. Raphaelle Cavalli, chief designer, comes from a background of textile design so it's no surprise that fabrics are the name of the game. Playfully spirited in subdued tones, the prints mix magically with each other creating a whimsical world of refined elegance. I particularly love the liberty print inspired mushroom garden (shown above.) The modern silhouettes are feminine with just the right touch of je ne sais quoi. Fairy god mother if you're out there - un petit wish s'il vous plaît?

Spring Cleanse

Last week's little taste of spring got me motivated. I said goodbye down coats and wool sweaters, hello sun dresses and sandals. Clearing away the bulk felt so right. Sadly, the tugging straps on my sun dress didn't feel right. Nor the style of my sandals which were so cute when I bought them - many moons ago. The situation spoke loud and clear. It was time for a cleanse. Every season or so, my closet is overrun by clutter and a barrage of unflattering clothes. A closet cleanse tackles the build up of extraneous or ill fitting items to create space for newer (and better) things to appear. In other words it's a good opportunity to reassess what has become of the mess. Let's get started.

Set aside at least 3 hours. Put on some music. Pull everything out of your closet.

Now go through each item. Do you love it? Does it look good on you? When was the last time you wore it? If you can’t remember the last time you wore it -- start the pile on the bed. This is the pile that no longer serves you. If you love it, but it is not flattering, see if alterations can help bring it up to size. A good tailor in your neighborhood is essential. Finally, if you don’t love it, AND it's not flattering, clearly it's time to say goodbye.

Once you’ve pulled everything out, go through the pile on the bed to determine if these items are primed for the garbage, or if they can serve someone else. As you put the keepers back into the closet create sections based on season and garment type. Tee shirts go together, pants together, skirts together, etc...If you have the space, put the out-of-season items up and out of the way. If you don’t have the space then just place them in the back, or the most out of reach section. Once your sections have been placed then go back and color coordinate.

After the cleanse you may see your wardrobe with fresh eyes. Perhaps you'll feel inspired to create new looks from your existing wardrobe. If you need to shop for updates then truly assess what is needed to round out the wardrobe. Consider these purchases an investment for your future. Then when it's time for your next closet cleanse, these purchases will feel current and ready to wear.

A Shoe For All Seasons

Shed a layer and pop on the sunnies - it's Springtime in New York City! Oh joy, oh bliss to dig out my silk scarf and effortlessly wrap it around my little jacket. It's pure harmony until I get to my shoes. My closet reveals only two options, both feel entirely inappropriate. If I reach for wedge sandals I'm an eager beaver. If I go for winter boots I'm a clunker. I'm looking to lighten up the load, to feel free with the gentle breeze. I want the perfect shoe to step comfortably into spring. And the ballet flat is calling my name.

Always chic, always versatile, flats worn without socks is an easy solution to transitional dressing. If you're going to dance into the world of ballet flats the prima ballerina is French company Repetto. Sticking close to their roots in dance wear, Repetto has perfected the classic flat. You'll find a wide range of colors and styles in the ballet slipper, and more recently they have branched out into lace-ups and gone wild with t-straps. Wear them with dresses, jeans, leggings, trousers, whatever - they literally go with everything. It's a no brainer for the sole.

Flower Forecast

Instead of falling into a cold weather despair, let's perk up with some warm weather cheer. Here's the dig on spring's latest crop of florals.

I must say I've got a soft spot for anything adorned with a floral. In college I painted daisies on my favorite pair of jeans in hopes of joining forces with the flower power movement. Fortunately for you, Levi's is doing a pair that is modern and fun. Made of denim and spandex, they're a cross between skinny jeans and jeggings. Wear them underneath a dress, or tunic and feel the fever of spring.

The biggest collaboration of the moment is Target and Liberty of London. The collection, which is not actually liberty fabric, but rather the liberty print on a cheaper fabric, seems to have something for the whole family and home. The NYC pop up shop was supposed to run through March 13th, but because of an unprecedented response has closed its doors early. Fortunately, the collection hits stores and the internet on the 14th so everyone can take home a little liberty.

H&M has launched their Garden Collection this spring with a wide range of women's clothing. They claim the pieces are made from recycled materials and organic cotton & linen. The print is refreshing, and stays true to the brand's friendly price point. But be warned, H&M was linked to the organic cotton fraud earlier this year.

Hey Kids, Keep it Simple

Recently, I styled an editorial for Lunchbox Magazine which brought me well into the world of pint size goodness. The youth oriented brands are really stepping up their game. I love how many are allowing the simplicity of their design to make the statement. A keenly placed ruffle or pleat speaks much louder than an over-styled bow or slew of zippers. Shown above is Bu and the Duck's Victorian pintuck ruffle dress. With its bohemian flair and carefree elegance, it's no wonder that Kate Moss bought one in every size for Lila Grace. Some of my other favorites include Estella, Flora and Henri, Les Petits Chapelais and Marilyn Tov.

Alice On Chains

With next Friday's release of Alice in Wonderland, the wickedly beautiful imagery of fantastical fairy tales can be seen all over the city. I couldn't help but to find inspiration in the glimpses of Tim Burton's over-the-top production that greets me on bus stops and subway platforms. The result is an Alice interpretation I styled for photographer Ella Manor and Twill Magazine. Take a peek at this version of Wonderland shot in Williamsburg last week.

This was the first shot of the day. We were all getting warmed up so a simple black and white palette seemed to fit the bill. The beauty of styling a 10 year old is she can fit into adult size shoes. What a score to find these vintage Mary Janes at What Goes Around Comes Around.

It's pretty amazing how a floral corsage can feel so right on a particular look. Without the feathers I don't think this outfit had much of a punch. Which is why I also introduced the mustard shoes to the somewhat simple color palette of magenta and cream. It's cool to pull some out of the blue elements and create a solid statement.

The challenge in styling this editorial story was that Ella wanted a rich palette consisting of fall/winter colors. As I scoured the showrooms and stores Spring was obviously the predominate season. My solution was to layer with the rich colors. Accessories were key. I found a burgundy fur bolero, (yes, fur for a 10 year old!) purple suede boots from H&M, purple crinoline from Screaming Mimi's, purple fabric collar from Anthropologie, and a purple scarf wrapped as an apron from Daffy's. The floral gloves with burgundy satin bows were my special touch to elevate this outfit to Wonderland.

This look felt like it was missing something. I attempted an underskirt only to find it didn't sit right on the swing. I played with extra jewelry, and saw that it took away from rather than added to the overall look. I guess in the end, less really is more.

Play Varsity This Spring

While everyone in fashion is looking at Fall 2010, I've got my eyes on Spring which is quietly hitting the stores. It's like deja vu when the pieces from the runway last September finally make their way to retail. But it was certainly no dream as I perused Bergdorf's 5F and found the chic varsity driven garments of Alexander Wang. His prepster with a twist collection says I play American football but I'm also with the band. Sort of like the mullet hairstyle that's classic up front, but rockin' in the back. A few of my favorites include a cut out sweater, asymmetrical sweatshirt and posy pocket apron shorts. I love how this collection is ripe for layering. Each and every item morphs easily with your existing wardrobe. Got a slouchy tee? No problem, tuck it loosely into asymmetrical sweatpants. Honestly, it doesn't get more comfortably chic than this. Simply, too cool for school.

Clogs Come Around

Who would've thought - Chanel models hoofing down the runway in clogs? Well I guess it's hardly hoofing when you're covered in Chanel. Which explains why people are jumping for the wooden heel. I must confess I've always been a big fan of the workman shoe. I love the easy slide-on factor, and I find there's something quite flirty when a clunky shoe accents a feminine look.

My adoration for the style harks back to the 70's when I opened up my first pair of Mia clogs. It was sheer exuberance for my 9 year old feet to clonk around in those heels. Everyone has days that start off grey. In fact yesterday was one of those days for me. A torrential downpour and an unruly windshield were taunting me from the get-go. I literally had no idea how I was going to pull myself together let alone make it through the dreary day. Here's a checklist that helps ensure smooth sailing no matter how high the water rises.

Days like this require comfort. But that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style. I usually tuck my rainboots into skinny jeans, and throw on a cashmere sweater over a soft cotton tank. For an extra boost I add jewelry, preferably something that has sentimental value. Cozy and stylish.
Tie in some color. An all black ensemble has its time and place, but wearing bright colors amidst the dark clouds may actually attract light.
Wet weather can wreak havoc on the hair. Mine is particularly prone to frizzy fly-aways. This is the perfect opportunity to add an accessory. Either keep your hat on all day, or play around with headbands and scarves.
Always check yourself in the mirror before you leave. No one is too busy to take 30 extra seconds to tuck in loose tags and clean off mascara smudges.

It's imperative not to leave home without your essentials. For me, this means my ipod. Packed next to my lip gloss and mini compact, the ipod shuffles through songs that remind me of brighter times.

The ball dropped, the noisemakers popped, and the champagne is long gone. The holidays have settled into a month of freezing cold. At this time of year I try to stay focused on positive thoughts and actions. But I find that impossible to do when I'm shivering from head to toe. It's at this moment when I rely on my wardrobe favorites for comfort and warmth. These aren't the trend pieces that change every season. These are the tried and true essentials that carry over year to year.

Black organic cotton turtleneck from H&M. I'm a huge fan of winterizing light fabrics. Once I add this turtleneck to any silk top or sleeveless dress, I'm loaded up for the sub zero temps.

Slouchy skull cap by Aqua. Yes, it's 20 degrees out there, and we all need a hat. I just happen to love this particular style for its I'm so cool and relaxed feel.

Long tank from American Apparel. I find it absolutely necessary to wear one of these under most tops. I love how the length adds dimension to my look, and more importantly how it covers my post holiday butt.

Dark denim from J Brand. Tuck them into boots, wear them under a spring dress and cardigan, or slide them on with your favorite tee. They literally go with everything.

Cascading cardigan from The Row. This is my go-to piece for around the house style. Unfortunately the heat in my apartment isn't quite up to par. Fortunately I can drape on this cardi, and lounge around in style. Enough said.

Now that I'm fully immersed in my summertime swing I can safely say that I have found two pairs of sandals to keep up with my city girl pace.
